Serve and Return Babble

Description

When your baby coos, babbles, or makes a gesture, you copy it back and then pause, giving them a turn to answer. The earliest back-and-forth conversation, built entirely on your baby's own sounds.

Play guide

  1. 1Get face to face with your baby when they are calm and alert - on their back, in your lap, or during a quiet moment together.
  2. 2Wait for your baby to make a sound or a movement (a coo, a squeak, a kick, a wave). That is their "serve."
  3. 3Copy it back warmly - make the same sound, or mirror the gesture - and then stop and wait, looking at them.
  4. 4Give them a few seconds to respond. Even a small sound or a wiggle is their turn. Copy that back too.
  5. 5Keep the gentle back-and-forth going as long as your baby stays interested. Follow their lead rather than steering.
  6. 6Stop when your baby looks away, yawns, or turns their head; that is them signaling a break.
