Description

Dance when the music plays, freeze when it stops - but the twist is that the parent "takes a photograph" by describing the frozen pose in funny, exaggerated detail while the child holds completely still. The description is the game.

Play guide

  1. 1Find a clear space of at least 6 feet across and put on music your child enjoys - any style works.
  2. 2Dance together while the music plays.
  3. 3Pause the music without warning. Both of you freeze.
  4. 4While both of you hold still, describe your child's pose in loud, silly, detailed language: "I can see one arm pointing straight at the ceiling, one knee bent, and one eye that's almost winking..."
  5. 5After your description, say "Portrait taken!" and start the music again. Continue for 5-10 minutes, pausing every 20-40 seconds.

Success signals

Your child holds still and listens to the description without dissolving into giggles right away. They make deliberate, interesting poses when they hear the music slowing or stopping. They ask to hear their portrait described again, or start describing yours back to you

If it's tricky

Your child can't hold still long enough to be described: Keep the description very short - three words is fine to start ("arm up, big smile"), and build from there as they get used to the pause. Your child loses interest in being described and just wants to dance: Flip the game - they describe your frozen pose instead, which requires the same stillness from them to observe you. The giggles break the freeze immediately: Lean in - a "laughing freeze" that they have to hold is a legitimate variant
