While your baby lies on their back, you slowly move your face in an arc above them so they can lock on and follow, pausing now and then for them to find you again. A quiet face-to-face moment for the first months.

Play guide

1. 1Lay your baby on their back on a firm, flat surface (a play mat or the floor) when they are calm and alert, not hungry or tired.
2. 2Bring your face about 20-30cm above theirs, close enough for a young baby to focus, and wait for them to lock onto your eyes.
3. 3Once they are looking, move your head slowly to one side in a gentle arc. Let them follow with their eyes and head at their own pace.
4. 4Pause when you reach the side. Stay still for a few seconds so they can hold their gaze or search for you if they lost you.
5. 5Slowly arc back the other way, talking or humming softly as you move.
6. 6Stop when your baby looks away, yawns, or turns their head. That is their signal they have had enough.
