Play guide

  1. 1Set a knobbed puzzle in front of your toddler with all the pieces in place.
  2. 2Lift one piece by its knob and set it beside the board so they can see the empty space.
  3. 3Invite them to pick up the piece by the knob and find where it goes.
  4. 4Let them turn and try the piece; the shape only fits its own spot, so it self-corrects.
  5. 5Add one more piece at a time as they succeed, keeping it well within reach.

Success signals

Your toddler grips a piece by the knob and lifts it out. They move a piece toward an opening and try to seat it. They keep working a piece rather than giving up when it does not drop in at once

If it's tricky

The whole puzzle overwhelms them: Remove all but one or two pieces. They cannot line a piece up: Tap the correct opening as a hint rather than doing it for them. They only want to remove pieces: Let them; taking out comes before putting back
