Near and Far Game

Description

Take turns naming objects in your space and saying whether each one is near or far. Practices spatial vocabulary through a simple back-and-forth game with no materials needed.

Cost: FreeBest time: Anytime

Play guide

  1. 1Start by pointing out two things: one close to you and one far away. Name each: "This cup next to me is near. That window over there is far."
  2. 2Ask your child: "Can you find something near?" Let them point or name it.
  3. 3Take your turn: find and name something far. Then ask them to find something far.
  4. 4After a few rounds, make it a challenge: "Can you find something that is really, really far away? The furthest thing you can see?"
  5. 5Switch it up: "Stand next to something near. Now walk to something far and stand next to it - is it still far?"

Success signals

Your child correctly labels objects as near or far at least 3 times. Your child understands that "near" and "far" change depending on where you're standing - when they walk to the far thing, they start to notice it feels near now. They engage in the back-and-forth for 3 or more rounds

If it's tricky

Near and far aren't landing as concepts yet: Make them physical - stand right next to something and say "this is as near as you can get," then walk as far away as possible and say "now it's far." The movement makes the concept more concrete. Child names everything as either near or far (not distinguishing): Pick one object and stand at different distances from it: "Now is it near or far? What about now?" Child wants to run rather than think: Redirect: "Before you run to it, is it near or far from here?"
