Description
Take turns spotting objects by color in whatever space you're in. Practices color recognition and scanning attention with no materials needed - works anywhere.
Play guide
- 1Start by saying "I spy something [color]" and give your child time to scan the space and point or name what they see.
- 2Accept their first correct answer and let them take a turn: "Now you spy something."
- 3When they give their clue, search yourself - even if you can see the answer, take a moment before finding it to keep the game balanced.
- 4After a few rounds, try harder variants: "I spy something that is both round and red." Adjust to what feels right for their age.
- 5End the game on your child's turn so they finish as the one who stumped you.
Success signals
Your child scans the room and names or points to a matching object without you narrowing it down further. They take turns giving clues rather than only guessing. They stay in the game for 5 or more rounds without needing to switch activities
If it's tricky
Your child doesn't know the color name: Say the color as you point to an example first ("blue - like this cup") before giving the clue; then try the game with that same color. They guess randomly rather than scanning: Slow down and scan together: "Let's look around - what do we see that might be blue?" They want to give clues but can't describe a color: Let them point and you guess - participating in the game structure matters more than using color words correctly. The space is too familiar and feels easy: Try a new room or do it outside
