Description
Give your child a wide paintbrush and a bowl of water and let them paint on any sun-warmed outdoor surface - the ground, a wall, a step, a pot. The wet marks appear as dark patches and slowly vanish as they dry, inviting your child to paint again and again.
What to prep
- paintbrush
- bowl
- water
Play guide
- 1Fill a small bowl or cup with water and hand your child a wide paintbrush (2-4cm width works best for small hands).
- 2Step outside to a warm surface - sun-warmed paving, a balcony floor, a courtyard wall, or any outdoor ground area.
- 3Show your child: dip the brush, press it to the surface, watch the mark appear. Then step back.
- 4Refill the water bowl when it runs low. Otherwise, let them paint freely.
Success signals
Your child paints continuously for 10 or more minutes, experimenting with different surfaces or patterns. They notice the marks fading and repaint the same spot. They call you over to watch the disappearing act
If it's tricky
Marks don't show up clearly: The surface isn't warm or smooth enough - try a different surface (a darker or smoother area takes marks better). Child loses interest quickly: Add a second brush and join them for a few minutes to model drawing shapes, letters, or outlines; shared play often re-engages. The water bowl tips over frequently: Use a heavier container (a mug or a wide bowl) and place it on a flat surface.
