Make the Bed

Description

After waking up, your child pulls up their own covers and arranges their pillows or cushions. Works with any sleeping setup - a raised bed, a floor mattress, a futon, or any other arrangement. Any level of tidy is a success at this age.

What to prep

  • bedding
  • pillow
Cost: FreeBest time: Morning

Play guide

  1. 1After your child is up and dressed, invite them to make their sleeping space tidy: "your turn to make your bed."
  2. 2For a raised bed: show how to pull the cover up from the foot and smooth it toward the pillows. Let them do it.
  3. 3For a floor mat or futon: show how to fold the mat or straighten it, or how to roll and put it away if that's your routine.
  4. 4Add pillows or cushions last - wherever looks right to them.
  5. 5Don't fix what they've done. A lumpy duvet is a made bed. The habit matters; the result doesn't need to be neat.

Success signals

Your child pulls the cover up without being reminded after a few weeks. They arrange their pillow or cushion in a way that feels satisfying to them. They consider the task "done" when they step away - they have a sense of completion

If it's tricky

The task is too physically difficult (heavy duvet, hard to reach): Simplify it - a lighter blanket, or just straightening the pillow. Your child resists: Keep it short: "just pull the cover up, that's all." Don't make it a power struggle. Their version of "tidy" is very different from yours: Let it be - this is their space and their standard. Two children share a room: Each is responsible for their own sleeping area only
