Description
A baby who can sit steadily explores a low basket of safe everyday objects, choosing what to pick up, hold, and mouth at their own pace while you sit close by. Open-ended sensory discovery led entirely by the baby.

Play guide
- 1Wait until your baby can sit steadily on their own. Sit them on the floor with a low, sturdy basket or shallow box in front of them.
- 2Fill the basket with 6-10 safe objects, each larger than 5cm, whole and smooth, with no small or detachable parts (a wooden spoon, a metal cup, a fabric square, a large wooden ring, a natural sponge).
- 3Sit close and stay quiet. Let your baby reach in, choose, hold, mouth, bang, and drop objects however they like. Do not direct the play.
- 4Watch and stay present, but resist naming or demonstrating; the value is in the baby's own free exploration and choice.
- 5Refresh the objects over days and weeks so there is always something to rediscover.
- 6End when your baby loses interest or tires. Wash mouthed objects before the next session.
Success signals
Your baby reaches in, selects objects, and explores each by mouthing, turning, banging, and dropping. They stay calmly absorbed for a stretch of minutes and return to the basket across days with fresh interest. Their choices and handling grow more deliberate over time.
If it's tricky
Baby tips the whole basket at once: That is fine - let them, then reset it; dumping is part of the exploration. Baby loses interest quickly: Swap in a few new objects with different weights and textures. Baby only mouths one object: Leave them to it; sustained focus on one thing is valuable, not a problem.
