Description
Set out a small pile of books, photo albums, or picture-heavy magazines and let your child look through them freely. No reading required - the activity is about independent browsing at their own pace, building the quiet reading habit without any pressure.
What to prep
- books
Play guide
- 1Gather 3-5 books or picture-heavy materials your child hasn't seen recently. Mix types - a picture book, a photo album of family pictures, a seed catalogue, a product catalogue, a children's magazine, or any picture-dense publication.
- 2Place them in a small pile in a comfortable spot - a cushion on the floor, a low table, or a cosy corner.
- 3Let your child choose from the pile and flip through at their own pace. No reading instruction, no questions. Just browsing time.
- 4Replenish with different books after a few sessions to keep it fresh.
Success signals
Your child settles with at least one book for 5 or more minutes without adult direction. They return to a page or flip back to look at something again. They bring a book to show you a picture they noticed.
If it's tricky
Child ignores the pile and wants to do something else: Sit with them briefly and open a book yourself - modelling the behaviour invites participation. The books are too familiar: Introduce one unfamiliar publication (a new catalogue or magazine) to spark curiosity. Child wants you to read aloud: Offer one read-aloud session first, then hand over and see if they continue alone. The pile gets overwhelming: Reduce to just two books - fewer choices can help.
