Description
Lie beside your child as they settle for rest or sleep, and slowly name each body part from toes to head, inviting each one to go soft and heavy. No props, no preparation - just a quiet voice and a few minutes that reliably bring the body into calm.
Play guide
- 1Lie your child down comfortably on their back, arms by their sides. Lie beside them or sit nearby.
- 2Start at their toes. Say in a slow, quiet voice: "Wiggle your toes... now let them go soft and heavy. They're resting now."
- 3Move slowly upward - feet, ankles, knees, legs, tummy, hands, arms, shoulders, neck, face. Spend 5-10 seconds on each area.
- 4Invite the child to choose which body part to notice next: "Where shall we go - tummy or hands?" This gives them a moment of agency within the calm structure.
- 5For the face: "Let your jaw go soft. Let your eyes close gently."
- 6End with: "Your whole body is resting now. You're doing so well." Then stay quiet or leave if they are settled.
Success signals
Your child's body visibly relaxes - unclenched hands, slower breathing, dropping shoulders. They stay still through most of the scan rather than fidgeting. They fall asleep during or shortly after, or move smoothly into quiet rest time
If it's tricky
Your child giggles or wiggles instead of relaxing: That's a normal early response - lower your voice further and continue slowly; the novelty settles within a minute or two. They resist lying down: Do the scan while they sit with a pillow in their lap rather than lying flat. They want to name the body parts themselves: Let them lead for one round, then you take over for the actual scan. The scan isn't producing calm: Slow the pace and add more pause between each body part - rushing is the most common reason it doesn't work
