Description
Stack blocks to build tall towers and structures, developing spatial reasoning, hand-eye coordination, problem-solving skills, and understanding of balance and gravity.
What to prep
- Building blocks (wooden or plastic)
- Flat stable surface for building
- Optional: small toys or figures to add to structures
Play guide
- 1Clear a flat, stable space on the floor or low table where child can comfortably reach.
- 2Dump out blocks and let child explore them freely - touching, sorting, stacking.
- 3Demonstrate stacking a few blocks to make a simple tower, then invite child to try.
- 4Celebrate when towers fall - it's part of the learning process about balance and gravity.
- 5As child gains skill, introduce gentle challenges: 'Can you make it taller?' or 'What if you use different shapes?'
Success signals
Child is focused on stacking, trying again after structures fall, experimenting with different arrangements, showing problem-solving when tower becomes unstable, requesting to build more.
If it's tricky
If frustrated by falling towers: use larger base blocks, build on carpet for stability, or work together with parent stabilizing bottom. If interest wanes: introduce vehicles or figures to use with structures. If too easy: challenge with one-handed building or building with eyes closed.
