Play guide

  1. 1Collect 6-10 empty containers - plastic cups, water bottles (lightly filled with a small amount of water or sand to stabilize them), or small boxes.
  2. 2Set them up in a triangular formation or a straight row at one end of a hallway or room.
  3. 3Mark a rolling line with tape or a piece of cloth about 6-8 feet away.
  4. 4Your child rolls the ball or a bundled pair of socks toward the pins from behind the line.
  5. 5Count the pins knocked down together, then reset and play again. Take turns if playing with others.
  6. 6Before starting, agree on how many rounds you'll play: "We're doing 5 rounds, then we stop." Count down the rounds aloud as you go ("Round 4... Round 5 - last one!") so the child can anticipate the end clearly.

Success signals

Your child aims the roll rather than just pushing the ball randomly - they adjust their aim based on where the previous roll went. They reset the pins enthusiastically and want another turn immediately after.

If it's tricky

The containers are too light and topple before being hit (from vibrations or air): Add a small amount of water or sand to the bottom of each one to stabilize them. Child can't reach the pins from the starting distance: Move the line closer - a near-total strike on every roll is more fun than constant misses. Bottles tip inconsistently: Switch to stacking plastic cups in a pyramid for a more satisfying scatter effect.
