Description
Place pillows, cushions, and other soft objects around the room as stepping stones. Your child navigates from one side to the other without touching the floor. Simple to set up, endlessly replayable, and uses up a lot of energy.
What to prep
- pillows
- clear_floor_area
- timer
Play guide
- 1Scatter 6-10 pillows, cushions, or folded towels across the floor to form a path your child can step between.
- 2Explain the rule: the floor is lava - touching it means starting over.
- 3Point to a start and an end point (e.g., the sofa to the doorway).
- 4Let your child plan a route and cross, stepping only on the objects.
- 5Reset the path and play again. Move the stepping stones further apart or closer together to adjust the challenge.
Success signals
Your child plans a route before moving. They adjust their path when they reach a gap. They ask to reset and play again when they reach the end
If it's tricky
The gaps are too wide and your child falls repeatedly: Move the stepping stones closer together - success matters more than challenge at first. Your child loses interest quickly: Join in yourself and make a show of "falling in the lava" when you step off. Cushions slide on hard floors: Place a folded towel underneath each one to stop them moving
