Description

Lay pairs of matching objects or cards face-down and take turns flipping two at a time, keeping a pair when you find a match. Practices visual matching and short-term memory through the classic pairs game structure.

Play guide

  1. 1Gather 4-8 pairs of matching items: two matching socks, two of each shaped block, or small stickers stuck in pairs on folded card pieces. Start with just 4-6 pairs (8-12 tiles) for younger children.
  2. 2Lay all items face-down or upside-down in a rough grid.
  3. 3You go first: flip two items over, look at them with your child, name what they are. If they match, keep them and go again. If not, flip them back face-down.
  4. 4Your child takes a turn. When they flip and find a match, celebrate the find. When they don't match, flip back and move on without dwelling.
  5. 5Play until all pairs are found. Count each player's pairs at the end - winning matters less than the counting.

Success signals

Your child remembers where at least one tile they've seen before is located and uses that memory to make a match. They stay engaged through the full game without needing to speed it up. They name the matching items when they find a pair

If it's tricky

Child can't remember where tiles are yet: Reduce to just 4 pairs (8 tiles) and play with the tiles slightly spread out so they're all visible in peripheral vision - this eases the memory load. Child wants to flip all the tiles at once and just look: Let them - then reset and play properly. That first "look at everything" pass is common and self-corrects with a little patience. Child gets frustrated with misses: Play with tiles face-up first (matching only) so they can practice the matching skill without the memory demand
