Description
Freeze colored water into small ice cubes overnight, then give your child the cubes to drag and press across paper - they melt as they move, leaving soft, watercolor-like color trails.

Play guide
- 1The night before (or at least 4-6 hours ahead): mix food coloring or a small amount of washable paint into water in separate cups. Pour into ice cube trays - one color per section. Freeze overnight.
- 2When ready to play, protect the table with plastic sheeting or newspaper. Have a dry cloth nearby. Dress your child in old clothes or an apron.
- 3Pop the ice cubes out and put them on a plate or small tray. Give your child a large sheet of paper.
- 4Let them pick up cubes and drag, press, circle, or dot them across the paper. The ice melts slowly and leaves color as it goes.
- 5When done (the cubes will melt completely in 15-20 minutes), leave the paper flat to dry.
Success signals
Your child experiments with more than one color. They try different gestures - dragging, dotting, pressing - to see how the color behaves. They describe the colors or patterns they're making as they go
If it's tricky
The cubes are too cold to hold comfortably: Let them sit at room temperature for 2 minutes before handing them over. Food coloring stains hands: That's normal - food coloring fades from skin in an hour or two but will stain fabric and surfaces permanently. Use old clothes and protect the table well. Paper buckles as it gets wet: Use thicker paper or stretch it on a clipboard. The child loses interest quickly (the cubes melt faster than expected): Have extra ice ready or set out two or three colors at once for more variety
