Description

Your child stands or sits at any window and watches what's outside - people, vehicles, trees, clouds, or whatever comes into view. They can describe what they see out loud, draw it, or simply observe. Works in any apartment or home setting and changes daily.

Play guide

  1. 1Set your child up at a window with a clear view - on a chair, cushion, or standing. For low windows or ground-floor views, no stool needed; for higher sills in apartments, make sure they can see comfortably without climbing.
  2. 2Give them a simple starting prompt if they need one - "See what's moving outside" or "Count how many different things you can spot." Leave the prompt open so they can direct their own looking.
  3. 3If your child wants to draw, hand them paper and a crayon or pencil and let them record what they see in whatever way makes sense to them.
  4. 4Step away. Check in after a few minutes if needed, but the activity is designed to run independently once the child is settled at the window.

Success signals

Your child stays at the window and comments spontaneously on what they see ("a bus went past," "that bird is back") for 5 or more minutes. If drawing, they make marks or shapes that represent what they observed and can tell you what they drew. On repeated days they may point out changes or regulars ("the man with the dog comes every morning")

If it's tricky

Child loses interest after under 2 minutes: Give a small challenge before stepping back - "Can you count 5 moving things before I come back?" A narrow goal extends focus without adding adult presence. Child wants you to stay and watch with them: Sit quietly beside them for the first minute and then move away gradually - they often settle once the window holds their attention. The view is very static (a blank wall, no traffic): Shift focus to the sky - clouds, light changes, birds, and planes are present in almost every view and change constantly.
