Description
Give your child a large cardboard box and let them transform it into whatever they have in mind - a house, a rocket, a shop, a cave. They decorate inside and out; the box becomes their world for the afternoon.
What to prep

Play guide
- 1Open up a large cardboard box and set it in a clear space with the opening facing the child.
- 2Ask your child what the box wants to be. Don't suggest too fast - give them a moment to look and decide.
- 3Hand over crayons, markers, or washable paint and let them decorate the outside however they like.
- 4While they decorate, cut any extra features they want - a window, a door flap, a mailbox slot. Child directs, you cut.
- 5Let them climb in and add details inside. Tape or glue on any extra bits (paper flags, fabric scraps, labels they draw).
Success signals
Your child spends at least 10 minutes decorating without being prompted. They climb inside and use the finished box for pretend play, not just look at it. They give the box a name or role ("this is the rocket ship")
If it's tricky
Your child doesn't know what to make it: Offer three specific options and let them pick - "house, rocket, or shop?" Paint is overwhelming the box structure (it gets soggy): Stick to markers and crayons instead. The box is too large and intimidating: Cut it down to a smaller size before starting. The child wants to cut things themselves: Give them a safe role - holding the cardboard flat, choosing where the window goes - while you do the cutting
