Description
Let children explore colors and textures through finger painting, developing fine motor skills and creative expression while experiencing tactile sensory input.
What to prep
- Washable finger paints (3-4 colors)
- Large sheets of paper or cardboard
- Old shirt or smock
- Newspaper or plastic sheet for floor protection
- Bowl of water and towels for cleanup
Play guide
- 1Set up workspace by covering table and floor with newspaper or plastic sheet.
- 2Dress child in old clothes or put on a painting smock.
- 3Place paper on protected surface and squeeze small amounts of paint onto a palette or directly on paper.
- 4Show child how to dip fingers in paint and make marks, then step back and let them explore freely.
- 5Resist the urge to direct - let the child discover mixing colors and creating patterns independently.
- 6When finished, help child wash hands thoroughly and lay artwork flat to dry.
Success signals
Child is fully engaged in the sensory experience, experimenting with different finger movements, mixing colors intentionally or accidentally, covering most of the paper, showing pride in their creation.
If it's tricky
If child is hesitant about mess: start with one finger, use thicker paint, or try painting in bathtub. If they mix all colors into brown: provide separate papers for each color. If losing interest: introduce new tools or switch to painting their hands for prints.
