Description
Before the meal, your child places napkins, cups, and utensils at each eating spot - wherever your family eats, whether that's a table, a low mat, or a floor setup. A real contribution to mealtime that becomes a satisfying routine.
What to prep
- napkins
- cups
- utensils
- step_stool
Play guide
- 1Count out how many people are eating. Tell your child the number and show them how many napkins, cups, or utensils to collect.
- 2Hand your child the items one type at a time - all napkins first, then cups, then utensils. One thing at a time is easier for young children to track.
- 3Walk through the first placement together, showing which spot gets what. Then let your child continue independently while you finish other prep.
- 4Stay nearby to answer questions and help if an item gets dropped. Don't correct placement unless it's genuinely wrong - "close enough" is a success at this age.
- 5When everything is in place, let your child announce "ready" or call the family to eat.
Success signals
Your child places items at each spot without skipping any. They check their work by counting seats and items. They want to do it again at the next meal or call someone to come see
If it's tricky
Your child loses track of the count: Walk through it together again - "let's count the seats first". They want to arrange things in a specific pattern: Let them; the goal is participation, not exact placement. A sibling wants to help too: Split the job - one does napkins, one does cups. Your child is frustrated by getting it "wrong": Remove the performance pressure - there is no wrong way to put a cup on a table
