Help Wash Vegetables

Description

While someone in your family is cooking, your child washes the vegetables in a bowl of water. A real contribution to the meal, and a chance to be part of the kitchen routine.

What to prep

  • bowl
  • vegetables
  • colander
  • towel
  • step_stool
Cost: FreeBest time: Anytime

Play guide

  1. 1Set up a sturdy bowl or basin of cool water on a low surface where your child can reach safely - a kitchen table or stool-height counter.
  2. 2Lay out the vegetables that need washing (carrots, potatoes, peppers, cucumbers - anything sturdy that can handle a child's grip).
  3. 3Show your child how to swish each vegetable in the water and rub off visible dirt with their hands.
  4. 4Have a clean bowl or colander ready for washed vegetables to go into.
  5. 5As the cooking adult, continue your prep nearby. Check in occasionally - "How's that carrot looking?" - without taking over.

Success signals

Your child washes each vegetable for 30+ seconds without losing interest. They place finished vegetables in the clean bowl without prompting after the first one or two. They want to do it again at the next meal.

If it's tricky

Child loses interest after 1-2 vegetables: That's okay - let them stop and continue your prep. Water splashes a lot: Lower the water level and place the bowl on a towel. Child wants to wash vegetables that are already washed: Hand them a new one (or let them wash the same ones twice - the goal is engagement, not efficiency). Child wants to use a knife to "cut": Gently redirect: knives are for grown-ups; their job is washing.
