Indoor Obstacle Course

Description

Set up a short obstacle course through the living room using pillows, chairs, towels, and tape. Your child runs the course, and you adjust the challenge each time. Works in a single room with ordinary household items.

What to prep

  • chairs
  • cushions
  • towels
  • tape
  • floor_path
Cost: FreeBest time: Anytime

Play guide

  1. 1Gather 4-6 household items to use as obstacles (chair to crawl under, cushions to jump over, towel to walk along, tape line to balance on).
  2. 2Lay them out in a sequence with a clear start and finish.
  3. 3Walk the course with your child first so they know what to do at each obstacle.
  4. 4Let them run it. Time them on a second run if they want a challenge.
  5. 5Change one or two obstacles and run it again. Ask your child to add an obstacle of their choice.

Success signals

Your child completes the course without skipping obstacles. They ask to run it again. They suggest changes or additions to the layout on their own

If it's tricky

Your child runs past obstacles rather than doing the action: Walk it together first and exaggerate each move so the expectation is clear. The course takes too long to set up and your child loses patience waiting: Involve them in setting it up - carrying a cushion or placing the tape. Your child finds it too easy and loses interest: Add a challenge - carry a small soft toy through the whole course without dropping it
