Description
At a regular meal, go around the table and each person says what kind of weather their day felt like - sunny, cloudy, stormy, rainy, or anything they invent. No explanation is needed unless someone wants to share more.
Play guide
- 1Pick a regular meal this will happen at - whichever one the family is most reliably together for.
- 2Start it yourself - say something like "I'm going to say what weather my day was. Mine was mostly sunny but a bit cloudy in the afternoon." Keep your answer short.
- 3Go around to each person - child, other adults, grandparents present. Each person says one weather word or phrase. If someone says "I don't know" or "fine," accept it. No prompting for more.
- 4That's it. The meal continues. On some days someone will want to explain; let them. On most days the weather word is the whole thing.
Success signals
Your child offers a weather word without being prompted after the first week or two. On hard days, a child choosing "stormy" tells you something without having to explain it. The ritual takes under two minutes and feels like part of the meal, not a separate exercise
If it's tricky
Your child always says "sunny" regardless of how their day actually was: That's fine - they may not be ready to express difficulty this way yet. Someone finds the format silly: Let them opt out; pressure destroys rituals. The check-in expands into long explanations every night: Gently hold the short format - a weather word can be a full answer. The family eats in shifts or separately most evenings: Pick any regular moment (before leaving in the morning, or at bedtime) instead
