Recycled Sculpture

Description

Save up empty packaging - bottles, boxes, tubes, trays - and set them out as building materials. Your child connects and tapes them into whatever structure they imagine, then decides where to display it.

Play guide

  1. 1Gather a collection of clean, empty packaging: cardboard tubes, small boxes, plastic bottles, egg cartons, bottle caps, plastic trays. Rinse any food containers before use.
  2. 2Set everything out on the table so your child can see the full range of pieces.
  3. 3Give them tape (masking tape works well for stacking; clear tape for finer joins) and let them build.
  4. 4Resist suggesting what to make. If they ask, ask back: "What do you think it could be?"
  5. 5When the structure feels done, decide together where to display it. Optional: decorate with markers or paint.

Success signals

Your child connects at least three pieces together deliberately. They describe what the structure is or name it. They want to keep and display the finished piece rather than knock it apart immediately

If it's tricky

Pieces keep falling apart: Masking tape is more forgiving than clear tape for irregular shapes - switch if needed. Child wants to knock the structure down as soon as it's built: That's valid - building and demolishing is still the activity. The collection of materials feels uninspiring: Add a few unusual shapes (a cone, a round container, an interesting package) to spark ideas. They need help connecting two pieces that won't stay: Hold the joint while they tape around it.
