Description
A small tray of natural objects your child can look at closely, sort, and arrange however they like, with a magnifier if you have one. It changes over time as you swap in new finds from walks.

Play guide
- 1Collect a handful of natural objects together on a walk or from around home (leaves, smooth stones, seed pods, twigs, feathers). Rinse anything dirty.
- 2Lay them on a tray so each one is easy to see and pick up.
- 3Offer a magnifier if you have one and show how to hold it close to look at details.
- 4Let your child explore freely by sorting, lining up, grouping, or just handling the pieces. Follow their lead rather than setting a task.
- 5Ask open questions such as "which ones feel the same?" and leave the tray out to return to over the week.
Success signals
Your child handles and looks closely at the objects. They start grouping or arranging them in their own way. They notice details and describe what they see or return to the tray on another day
If it's tricky
Child glances and walks away: Pick up one object yourself and wonder aloud about it to draw them back. Child only wants to dump the tray: That is fine handling at this age; help refill it and keep it available. A younger sibling mouths the objects: Use only large finds and stay close
