Design a Capsule Wardrobe

Description

Your teen goes through their own closet and picks a small set of pieces that mix and match into lots of different outfits - no new shopping required. They choose their own system for planning combos, whether that's a paper grid, sticky notes, or phone photos, and end up with a wardrobe plan built entirely from what they already own.

Play guide

  1. 1Your teen pulls every wearable item from their closet and drawers out onto their bed or a clear floor area, so everything is visible at once instead of hidden on hangers or tucked in drawers.
  2. 2They sort everything into two piles - pieces they actually like and still wear, and everything else (too small, never worn, out of season) - setting the second pile aside for now.
  3. 3From the "keep" pile, they choose their own system for planning combos - a grid drawn on paper, an outfit list in a notebook, sticky notes grouped on the floor, or photos snapped on a phone - whichever way of organizing makes the most sense to them.
  4. 4They mix and match pieces into complete outfits, experimenting with different top, bottom, and layer pairings, and record each combo they land on using whichever system they picked.
  5. 5They count up how many different outfits their chosen pieces can make, then pick a handful of favorites to actually try on.
  6. 6Optional: they show a family member their favorite look or walk them through the plan.

Success signals

Your teen sorts through their full closet and drawers without you having to nag them through it. They land on a specific system (grid, list, or photos) for planning outfit combos, on their own. They can name a specific number of different outfits their chosen pieces create. They try on and show off at least one favorite combo they planned

If it's tricky

Your teen is overwhelmed by how much clothing is on the bed or floor at once: Have them start with just one category, like tops only, pick their favorites from that pile first, then move on to bottoms. They realize most of what they own does not actually mix and match well: Treat that as useful information rather than a disappointment - it just means the "set aside" pile and any wish list are doing their job. They lose steam partway through sorting: Let them stop and pick it back up later or the next day; splitting it across two shorter sessions works just as well as one long one. They want to count worn-out or too-small items as part of the capsule: Gently steer those into the set-aside pile for donating or passing down, separate from the working wardrobe
