Coloring Quiet Time

Description

Set out simple outline pictures and a set of crayons or coloured pencils and let your child fill in colors at their own pace. The outlines can be drawn by hand, printed, or cut from a colouring book - the child does the colouring, you do other things nearby.

Play guide

  1. 1Prepare 2-4 simple outline drawings. Options: draw large simple outlines yourself (a circle for a sun, a box for a house, a rough animal shape); print from a free colouring page website; or use pages from a colouring book.
  2. 2Set the pages and crayons or coloured pencils on a table within reach. No instructions needed - the outline guides the child.
  3. 3Let your child choose a page and begin. Do not direct color choices.
  4. 4Stay in the same room for young children; older children (4+) can colour independently without adult presence.

Success signals

Your child selects a page and focuses on it for 10 or more minutes, choosing colors with intention rather than filling rapidly. They complete at least one picture and want to start a second. They choose their own color combinations without asking for direction

If it's tricky

Child fills each page in under 2 minutes and asks for more: Add more complex outlines or introduce the idea of filling each section a different color - slower, more deliberate. Child only wants to scribble rather than stay inside the lines: That's developmentally appropriate for under-4s - provide blank paper alongside and accept both modes. Crayons break with heavy-handed pressing: Offer a few chunky crayons as an alternative; thick-barrel crayons hold up to toddler grip.
