Water the Plants

Description

While a grown-up tends to household plants, your child does the watering - using a small watering can or cup, and following simple guidance on how much each plant needs. A real care task with a satisfying, visible result.

Play guide

  1. 1Choose one or two plants to water together. Tell your child how much each plant needs - "this one needs one small cup" is a concrete instruction a 2-year-old can follow.
  2. 2Fill a small watering can or cup for your child - small enough that they can carry it without spilling.
  3. 3Show your child where to pour: near the base of the plant, not on the leaves. One demonstration is usually enough.
  4. 4Let your child water their plant. Expect some spills; have a cloth nearby.
  5. 5When the water is gone, the job is done. Let your child check the soil ("does it feel wet?") if they're curious.

Success signals

Your child pours the water near the base of the plant rather than on themselves or the floor. They want to check if the plant "drank" it. They ask to water again the next time

If it's tricky

Child overwaters enthusiastically: Use a smaller cup and guide "one cup for this plant, then we stop." Child wants to water the same plant multiple times: Redirect to a new plant or explain "this one is full now." Spills happen: Treat them calmly and wipe up together - spills are expected. Child wants to touch the soil or dig in the pot: Redirect gently or let them touch the surface briefly if it's safe.
