Play guide
- 1On a hot day, bring a large basin, bucket, or washing-up bowl outside to your balcony, courtyard, or accessible outdoor area.
- 2Fill it with cool water - not cold, not warm. Ankle depth or shallower is plenty.
- 3Add a few containers for pouring (cups, empty bottles, scoops) and a few floating objects - for children under 3, use only objects larger than a fist (a small plastic bowl, a large spoon, a sealed empty bottle). For children 3 and older, smaller objects like large plastic lids or folded paper boats can be added.
- 4Let your child explore freely - pouring, splashing, floating, filling. Stay close; do not leave the area.
- 5When the session is done, empty the basin away from play surfaces and tidy up.
Success signals
Your child stays engaged for 10+ minutes without prompting - pouring, refilling, and experimenting with the objects. Your child returns to the basin after a break rather than walking away. The cooling effect is obvious; they seem comfortable rather than overheated
If it's tricky
Child immediately tries to climb into the basin: Redirect - offer a sponge or cloth to squeeze and drip into the water, which satisfies the desire to get wetter without the safety risk of standing in the basin on a hard surface. Child runs out of ideas quickly (pouring stops being interesting): Add one new object at a time - a small funnel, a different-sized container, a floating leaf - to restart exploration without overwhelming the setup. The water temperature is too cold and child hesitates: Let the basin sit in the sun for a few minutes before starting.
