Description
Give your child a sheet of paper and a set of stickers and let them build a scene by placing stickers wherever they like. When they're done - or mid-way through - ask them to tell you what's happening. The stickers do the heavy lifting; the story comes naturally.

- 1Lay a sheet of paper on the table (A4 or larger) and set out a sheet of stickers within reach.
- 2Invite your child to put the stickers on the paper however they like. Don't suggest a theme - let them lead.
- 3When they've placed several stickers, or when they show you their work, ask "What's happening here?" and listen.
- 4Let them add more stickers, rearrange, or start a second page. Stay nearby but don't direct the scene.
Success signals
Your child places stickers with intention, moving or grouping them. They narrate what's happening without much prompting. They ask for more paper or a second round of stickers.
If it's tricky
Child puts all the stickers on at once without pausing: That's fine - ask for the story at the end rather than mid-way. They can't peel the sticker backing easily: Help them start the first peel and let them pull the rest. They put stickers on furniture or themselves instead of the paper: Redirect calmly and reframe: "all the stickers go on the paper - let's see how many you can fit." For very young children (2-3y) who are mostly interested in the peeling action: That engagement is the whole point - no story is needed.
