Play guide
- 1Only start once your baby can sit steadily and has begun solids, and always seat them upright in a high chair or supported seat - never reclined or moving.
- 2Offer a few pieces of soft, safe food cut into shapes a baby can hold (soft-cooked vegetable sticks, ripe soft fruit pieces, well-cooked finger-sized pieces), following current infant-feeding guidance.
- 3Place a couple of pieces within reach and let your baby look, touch, squish, and bring food to their mouth themselves. Do not put food into their mouth for them.
- 4Sit right beside them, giving full attention throughout, and let them explore at their own pace - messiness and dropping are part of it.
- 5Follow their cues, offering more when they reach, stopping when they turn away, and never pressuring them to eat.
- 6Clean up together afterward as part of the routine.
Success signals
Your baby reaches for, grasps, and brings food to their mouth themselves, exploring texture with hands and mouth. Over weeks their grasp becomes more precise (thumb-and-finger pincer) and more food actually reaches their mouth. They show interest and enjoyment at mealtimes.
If it's tricky
Baby only squishes and drops food without eating: That is normal early exploration; keep offering and stay relaxed - milk is still their main nutrition this year. Baby gags: Stay calm; gagging is a normal protective reflex and is different from choking (silent, no sound), which is an emergency. Baby loses interest quickly: Offer fewer pieces and keep sessions short. Baby throws food: Treat it lightly and end the session if it becomes the game.
