Three Object Balance

Description

After Mystery Box, test three safe objects to see how many stable resting positions each one has on a table.

What to prep

  • Large wooden block
  • Plastic cup
  • Wooden spoon
Cost: FreeBest time: Anytime

Play guide

  1. 1Put a large wooden block, plastic cup and wooden spoon on a clear table. Try each one in two different resting positions without holding it.
  2. 2When an object falls, change its orientation rather than propping it up. Count a position only when it stays by itself for three seconds.
  3. 3Choose the object with the strangest stable position and show that position to the other person.

Success signals

The child experiments with orientation and stability using real objects and visible results.

If it's tricky

If an object rolls off easily, keep it near the centre of the table or use the floor instead.
