Description
Lay two types of objects in an alternating sequence and ask your child to say what comes next and keep it going. Practices pattern recognition by building and extending simple repeating sequences.

Play guide
- 1Gather two types of objects - anything you have 4-6 of each: two colors of socks, spoons and forks, small toys of two types, blocks of two colors, or two kinds of anything similar.
- 2Lay the first four objects in a clear alternating line: A, B, A, B. Point to each as you lay it: "sock, cup, sock, cup."
- 3Stop and ask: "What comes next?"
- 4When your child answers, ask them to place the next object. Continue extending the line together, taking turns adding one object at a time.
- 5Once the pattern is long (8-10 objects), point to the middle of the pattern and ask: "What comes right after this one?" - checking they understand it's a rule, not just adding to the end.
Success signals
Your child correctly predicts what comes next after seeing 4 objects of the pattern. They continue the pattern by placing the next object without help. They notice if you deliberately break the pattern ("wait, that's wrong!")
If it's tricky
Child can't predict what comes next: Point to each object and say its name as you go, then pause at the gap and say the name of the first type questioningly ("sock… cup… sock… cup… so what do you think?"). Rhythm and chanting the pattern aloud often helps more than visual inspection. Child is getting it easily and wants more challenge: Move to an ABB or AAB pattern (sock, cup, cup, sock, cup, cup). Child breaks the pattern accidentally: Ask "does that look right? let's read it from the start" and have them say each one aloud
