Description
Arrange a simple scene on a tray or open surface using a piece of cloth, a few blocks, and small figurines, then step back. Your child takes over, moving figures through stories and scenarios of their own invention - calm, absorbed, and self-directed.

Play guide
- 1Choose a tray, a chopping board, or a clear floor area. Lay a piece of fabric or a folded cloth for the base (green cloth for a field, blue for water, any color works).
- 2Add 2-3 simple structures using blocks, cardboard pieces, or upturned cups and bowls - these become hills, houses, caves, or whatever your child decides.
- 3Place 4-8 figurines on the scene (animals, people, vehicles - whatever you have). Don't arrange them into a story; leave them neutral.
- 4Show your child the scene briefly and let them take over. You do not need to stay.
Success signals
Your child moves figures around the scene with narrative (for example, "the lion goes here, now the horse comes"). Your child rearranges the landscape on their own. Your child plays for 15+ minutes without adult direction. Your child returns to the scene across multiple sessions without asking you to rebuild it each time
If it's tricky
Child doesn't engage with the scene: Sit next to them and move one figure very simply - "the animal is going for a walk" - then step back. Minimal scaffolding usually starts the story. Child knocks the whole thing apart immediately: That may be their play style (destruction is valid play); set up again together and invite "now what do they do?" Figurines are all the same type and child seems bored: Add a contrasting element - a different type of figure, a small cup of water for a "lake," a few pebbles for rocks.
