Description

Pull together a box of old clothes, scarves, hats, and fabric scraps, and hand it to your child. They pick, combine, and dress up into characters of their own invention - no script, no theme set by you.

Play guide

  1. 1Gather old or spare clothes, scarves, hats, fabric pieces, belts, bags, or accessories into a box or basket. The more varied, the better.
  2. 2Put the box in a clear space and open it without comment.
  3. 3Let your child dig in and combine pieces however they like. Resist suggesting outfits or characters.
  4. 4If they want you to be part of the story, take a costume yourself and follow their lead.
  5. 5The "activity" continues as long as they're in character - which can be minutes or most of the afternoon.

Success signals

Your child digs into the box and combines at least two items into an outfit. They name or describe the character they've become without being prompted. They stay in character (or rotate through characters) for at least 5-10 minutes.

If it's tricky

Child picks one item and wanders off: Play with the box yourself dramatically - most children re-engage when they see an adult being silly in costume. They want specific items that aren't there ("I need a crown"): Improvise together with what's available ("let's make one from this scarf"). They dress up but don't know what to do in character: Give the character a very simple problem - "I heard the explorer needs to find something hidden in the house."
