Description
When screen time is about to end, put on one specific song. The song runs to its end; that's when the screen goes off. Your child helped choose the song, which makes the transition predictable and shared rather than imposed.

- 1Pick a moment when you're both calm to choose the song together. Tell your child - "We're going to pick one song that plays when screen time is finishing. You can help choose it." Play two or three options and let them decide.
- 2From now on, every time screen time is ending, start the song before saying anything else. Just put it on.
- 3The screen goes off when the song finishes - not before, not after. The song is the countdown. If the song is 3 minutes, the child has 3 minutes.
- 4If your child protests when the screen goes off at the end of the song, acknowledge it briefly ("I know, it's hard to stop") and move on. Don't re-negotiate the end point.
- 5The song can change over time - let the child choose a new one every few months if they want.
Success signals
Your child recognises the song and begins finishing up on their own before it ends. Transition resistance decreases after the first week or two. On some days your child starts asking to put on "the song" themselves when they sense screen time is ending
If it's tricky
Child still resists at the end of the song: Hold the rule without a long negotiation - "the song ended" is a complete sentence. The same song starts to cause resistance because of association: Choose a new one together; the ritual is the concept, not the specific song. A caregiver other than the parent handles screen time: Make sure they know the song - consistency is what makes the ritual work. Child keeps asking for "one more song": Acknowledge the wish and decline; the ritual's power comes from its predictability
