Description
Your child tears colored paper into pieces of any size and glues them onto a base sheet - building up a mosaic, a picture, or a pattern out of the pieces. No scissors involved, which makes this a great option for younger children.

Play guide
- 1Gather a few sheets of colored paper in different colors. Tear each sheet into rough strips to start - this gives your child a workable starting size.
- 2Give your child the strips and let them tear further into smaller pieces, any shape they like. Demonstrate tearing once; most children take to it quickly.
- 3Set out a base sheet (thicker paper or card works best) and a glue stick or small pot of white glue.
- 4Let your child arrange and glue pieces onto the base however they like - covering the whole sheet, making a picture, or building a pattern.
- 5Set aside to dry flat once they're done.
Success signals
Your child tears paper independently for at least 3 minutes without losing interest. They place pieces deliberately on the base sheet (even if the pattern seems random to you). The finished piece has pieces glued down, not just laid on top.
If it's tricky
Your child finds tearing difficult (especially for very young children or those with less hand strength): Score the paper first with a thumbnail to give them a starting point. Glue stick isn't holding torn edges (which can curl): Switch to white liquid glue applied with a fingertip. Your child wants to tear but doesn't want to glue: Let the tearing be the activity - sorting the pieces by color or size is a complete extension. They cover the whole page in one color: Offer a second color and ask if anything wants to go on top.
