Child-Chosen Snack Recipe

Description

Your child chooses between two simple no-cook snacks, then leads the steps to make it with you beside them. Making the choice and following the order of steps are the heart of it.

  • spreadable_topping
  • spoon
  • bowl
Cost: LowBest time: AnytimeCreates something to keep

Play guide

  1. 1Offer your child a choice between two simple no-cook snacks (for example fruit and yoghurt, or spread on rice crackers). Let them pick.
  2. 2Lay out the few ingredients and tools needed, all no-cook and no-knife for the child.
  3. 3Talk through the steps together in order, then let your child lead each step (washing, scooping, spreading, arranging) while you stay beside them.
  4. 4Do any part that needs a knife or heat yourself; your child does the safe steps.
  5. 5Serve and enjoy the snack they made, naming the steps they led.

Success signals

Your child makes a clear choice between the two options. They lead the steps in a sensible order with light guidance. They stay involved to the end and are proud to eat what they made

If it's tricky

Child cannot decide between the two options: Hold up each option and let them point rather than say it. Child wants to skip steps or eat as they go: Gently bring them back to the next step, or let a little tasting happen; the sequencing goal still holds. Child loses interest partway: Finish the last step together so they still get the result
