Play guide

  1. 1Find a clear stretch of hard floor - a hallway, corridor, or open room with no rugs or obstacles in the path. At least 6 feet of clear sliding space.
  2. 2Both put on socks (no bare feet - less slide; no shoes - too much grip).
  3. 3Do a first run each to find the starting point and landing zone. Mark them loosely with a folded towel or a line of tape if helpful.
  4. 4Time the runs - count aloud or use a phone timer. Try to beat your own time each round.
  5. 5Each round, add one small challenge - slide and touch a wall, slide under a parent's arm held out, slide and pick up a small object placed on the floor.

Success signals

Your child slides independently and asks to go again immediately after each run. They accept the challenge of adding a new obstacle each round and attempt it without prompting. Laughter is reliable when the slide goes long.

If it's tricky

The slide stops too quickly (floor is slightly rough or socks are thin): Try a different room or floor surface - not all hard floors slide equally. Wooden floors and smooth tiles work best; rough textured vinyl may not work at all. Child falls the first time and becomes hesitant: Slow things down - do slow, controlled slides together before building speed, and give them a hand to hold for the first few runs. The hallway is too short for a real slide: Change the game to spinning in circles in socks on a smooth surface instead - same fun, different movement.
