Play guide
- 1Set a tray on a low table with two bowls side by side and put a handful of large objects in the left bowl.
- 2Show your toddler once how to scoop one object with the spoon and tip it into the empty bowl.
- 3Hand over the spoon and let them try, staying beside them the whole time.
- 4Let them scoop back and forth as many times as they like, at their own pace.
- 5When they lose interest, invite them to tip the objects back into one bowl to finish.
Success signals
Your toddler brings the spoon to a bowl and tips objects out, even if some drop. They repeat the scooping several times and stay with the task for a few minutes. They watch their own hand closely as they move each object
If it's tricky
They use their hand instead of the spoon: That is fine at this age - let them, and model the spoon again next time. They tip the whole bowl out at once: They are exploring the dumping schema; offer fewer objects and try again calmly. They lose interest fast: Reduce it to two or three objects and a shorter session
