Description
Choose a movement challenge - balance on one leg, walk backwards, or cross the room in slow motion - and attempt it alongside your child. You both try, you both count, you both encourage each other. No materials needed.
What to prep
- floor_space
Play guide
- 1Pick a challenge together. Suggest 2-3 options and let your child choose: balance on one leg as long as possible, walk backwards across the room without bumping into anything, or do a full slow-motion crossing of the room.
- 2Do it together at the same time. You attempt it alongside them - no spectating.
- 3Count out loud during timed challenges (how many seconds balanced, how many slow-motion steps).
- 4Celebrate the attempt, not just the result. Try again. Try a different challenge.
- 5Suggest progressions: can you balance even longer? Can you walk backwards with your eyes closed partway?
Success signals
Your child attempts the challenge with effort - they're concentrating, not just going through the motions. They respond to your attempt with interest and want to beat your result or match it on their next try.
If it's tricky
Child gives up quickly after one attempt: Try the challenge yourself visibly and imperfectly - falling off balance or bumping into something makes it clearly fine to struggle. They choose a challenge that's too hard immediately: Suggest starting with a simpler version of the same challenge ("balance for just 3 seconds"). One challenge runs out of energy fast: Have a list of 3-4 options ready so you can move immediately to the next.
