Foil Boat Cargo Test

Description

After exploring river habitats, make two foil boats at home and test which carries more cargo before water comes aboard.

What to prep

  • Two pieces of foil
  • Shallow tray with about 2 cm of water
  • Large identical plastic blocks
  • Towel
Cost: FreeBest time: Anytime

Play guide

  1. 1Shape two palm-sized foil pieces into boats with raised edges. Make one wide and one narrow.
  2. 2Float them in a shallow tray. Take turns adding identical large plastic blocks, counting each boat's load.
  3. 3Reshape the weaker boat and try again with the same blocks. Compare the load it now carries.

Success signals

The child changes boat shape and tests it against a counted load.

If it's tricky

The foil leaks: double the foil or test one waterproof plastic lid first to see how loading works.
