Description
Your child picks something outdoors they are curious about, writes down a guess about what will happen, then checks the same spot over several days and records what they notice in a small notebook.

- 1Go outside together and let your child pick one thing they want to find out about (a plant, a puddle, an ant trail, where the shade falls).
- 2Help them turn the curiosity into a question they can actually check, such as whether the puddle will still be there tomorrow.
- 3Ask them to write or draw their guess in the notebook first, helping with spelling if they want it.
- 4Over the next few days, visit the same spot together and let your child add a note or drawing about what they see each time.
- 5At the end, look back through the pages together and talk about how the guess compared with what really happened.
Success signals
Your child names something they want to find out and offers a guess, even a wild one. They come back to check their spot at least twice and add a mark or drawing each time. They notice out loud when the result matches or surprises their guess.
If it's tricky
Child cannot think of a question: Offer two or three specific choices to pick from rather than asking them to invent one from nothing. Child loses steam before the days are up: Shrink the project to a single morning and afternoon comparison. Writing frustrates them: Let them draw the record or say it out loud while you write it down.
