Play guide
- 1Ask your child to name a topic they would love to spend time on, then help them shrink it to one small, finishable goal for the week.
- 2Together, write the goal at the top of a sheet and list 3 to 5 steps that would get there.
- 3Set aside a short work session each day. Your child works on the next step while you stay nearby and available for questions.
- 4At the end of each session, ask what they did and what they will do next, and let them tick off any finished step.
- 5On the last day, have your child present the result to the family in whatever form fits the topic, such as a poster, a model, a demo, or a short talk.
Success signals
Your child names a topic without much prompting and narrows it to one goal. They return to the project across more than one day and can say what they did last time. They want to show the result rather than being made to.
If it's tricky
Child picks a goal that is far too big to finish in a week: Help them carve off one small slice and park the rest for later. Child stalls partway through the week: Sit with them and re-read the step list together rather than adding pressure. A step is blocking everything else from moving forward: Let them drop that step. Child loses interest in the topic entirely: It is fine to switch topics once, as long as they still land a small finished result.
