1Before going outside, decide on 5-8 things to find. Use descriptive clues rather than specific objects: something rough, something green, something that moves in the wind, something smaller than your hand, something that makes a sound.
2Go to your outdoor space - balcony, courtyard, garden, or nearby open area.
3Read out the first clue. Give your child time to look and find something that fits.
4When they find something, celebrate it. Move to the next clue.
5For items that can't be picked up (a big rock, a tree), "touching" or pointing counts.

Success signals

Your child searches actively - looking under things, touching surfaces, scanning the area - rather than waiting to be shown. Your child brings you a find with visible excitement and asks "what's next?"

If it's tricky

Child can't find anything for a clue: Help them by narrowing the search area ("look just around this tree") rather than pointing to the answer - the searching is the point. Child wants to collect everything they find rather than just the items on the list: Let them; the list is structure, not a constraint. You're on a small balcony and run out of things to find: Shift to indoor scavenger hunt using the same clue style.

Younger, 2-3 years: Use only 3-4 clues and focus on simple attributes (a leaf, something brown, something hard). Carry the child to spots if needed. Older, 5-7 years: Add harder clues (something with a pattern, something alive, something that casts a shadow) or turn it into a points game. Siblings: Each child gets the same list and they race, or they share a list and take turns finding each item. Lower-stimulation option: For children sensitive to open outdoor environments or crowds, run the hunt on a familiar balcony, a quiet building courtyard, or entirely inside the home. Use quieter sensory clues (something soft, something with a pattern, something that smells nice) rather than clues that require handling many unfamiliar objects. The list-based structure gives predictability - your child knows when the activity is done (all items found).
