Hand Shadow Puppets

Description

Darken a room, shine a torch or lamp toward a plain wall, and use your hands to make shadow shapes - animals, characters, creatures. Take turns inventing shapes and let a simple story emerge between you. All it needs is a light source and a wall.

What to prep

Play guide

  1. 1Find a room you can darken, or wait for evening. Place a torch (flashlight), phone torch, or lamp about 1 metre behind where your hands will be, aimed at a plain light-colored wall.
  2. 2Darken the room enough for shadows to show clearly. Turn off overhead lights.
  3. 3Make a simple shape first - a flat hand becomes a bird, a fist with two fingers up becomes a rabbit. Show it to your child on the wall.
  4. 4Take turns: your child tries a shape, then you try one. Build a short story - "the bird meets the rabbit, what do they do?"

Success signals

Your child attempts their own hand shapes without copying yours exactly, experimenting with finger positions to change the shadow. They contribute to the story narrative - naming characters, suggesting what happens next. The session extends past the first few shapes

If it's tricky

Shadows don't appear clearly because the light source isn't direct enough: Move it closer to the hands or switch to a brighter torch. Shadows are still weak even with a decent light source: Ambient light in the room may be too high, so darken further. Your child can't form recognisable shapes: The specific form matters less than they think - name the shadow whatever it becomes ("oh look, that's a dragon!") and move forward. Your child is nervous about the dark room: Leave a small ambient light on in a corner rather than fully darkening; some shadows work even in partial dark
