Description
Explore atmospheric lighting at home after the candlelit concert. Use a torch and a familiar object to make a shadow grow and shrink without changing the object.
What to prep
- Torch with secure battery compartment
- Large toy
- Optional paper and removable tape
Cost: FreeBest time: Anytime
Play guide
- 1Place a familiar object, such as a large toy, between a torch and a plain wall in a dim room.
- 2Keep the object still and move the torch nearer or farther. Each predict which move will make the shadow larger, then test it.
- 3Swap torch-holder and predictor. Try making one shadow fit inside a paper outline taped to the wall.
Success signals
The pair changes a real lighting distance and compares the resulting shadow size.
If it's tricky
A wall is unavailable: use a sheet of paper propped safely on a table as the screen.
