Slow Object Offering

Description

You hold a single graspable object still within your baby's view and wait for them to notice, reach, and take it themselves, instead of placing it into their hand. Gives your baby the whole loop of seeing, deciding, and grasping.

Play guide

  1. 1Choose one safe, easy-to-hold object that is larger than 5cm with no small or detachable parts.
  2. 2With your baby calm and supported (on their back, or held in a semi-upright position), hold the object still about 20-30cm in front of them, roughly at chest height.
  3. 3Wait. Let your baby look at it, then move toward it. Do not put it in their hand or wave it around.
  4. 4When they reach and touch it, hold steady so they can close their grip and take it. Let them hold, mouth, and explore it as they wish.
  5. 5When they drop it or lose interest, you can offer it again slowly, or offer a different single object. One at a time.
  6. 6Stop when your baby turns away or fusses.

Success signals

Your baby looks at the object, then reaches and takes it themselves rather than waiting for you to place it. Over weeks their reach gets more direct and their grip more sure. They explore what they take by looking, mouthing, and turning it.

If it's tricky

Baby does not reach: Hold the object closer and be patient - early reaching is slow and takes many tries; you can also try when they are more alert. Baby gets frustrated and cannot close their grip: Hold the object steady against their open hand rather than pulling it away so they can succeed. Baby only ever mouths and never looks first: That is normal for young babies; mouthing is how they explore.
