Description
Spread a thin layer of flour, fine salt, or clean sand across a tray and let your child draw in it with their finger - lines, shapes, letters, or anything else. One shake of the tray erases it all and they can start again. Quietly absorbing and endlessly repeatable.

Play guide
- 1Choose a tray or baking pan with a rim at least 1cm high. A metal baking tray or a plastic storage tray lid both work well.
- 2Spread a thin, even layer of fine salt, plain flour, or clean fine sand, enough to cover the surface lightly (about 3-5mm depth).
- 3Show your child: drag one finger slowly through the material and lift. Then tip the tray gently to smooth the surface.
- 4Hand over and let them draw freely. No need to stay.
Success signals
Your child draws repeatedly (patterns, shapes, scribbles, letters) and deliberately shakes the tray to erase and start over. They engage for 10+ minutes without needing redirection. They show you their marks or narrate what they're drawing
If it's tricky
Your child pours material off the edge of the tray: Place the tray inside a larger tray or on a sheet of paper to catch overflow. The surface isn't smooth enough for clear marks: Add a little more material. Your child is blowing the material rather than drawing in it: Redirect gently to the finger-draw. Flour is puffing into the air with rough handling (a concern with under-3s): Switch to fine salt or sand, which are heavier and don't puff, or supervise closely and encourage gentle touches
