Pack and Unpack the Bag

Description

Your child packs their own bag for the next day - finding their water bottle, snack container, or a book and putting them in - or unpacks when coming home and returns each item to its place. Either direction builds a real household routine the child owns.

Play guide

  1. 1Decide which direction you're doing: packing for tomorrow, or unpacking after today.
  2. 2For packing: name what goes in the bag together ("water bottle, snack box, library book"). Let your child find each item and add it. Check the list at the end.
  3. 3For unpacking: as your child takes each item out, name where it goes. "Water bottle - where does that live?" Then they carry it there.
  4. 4The grown-up supervises and prompts but does not pack or unpack for them. The child's bag is their responsibility.
  5. 5Finish with a small ritual - zip the bag closed, hang it on a hook, or set it by the door. A clear endpoint helps the routine stick.

Success signals

Your child finds at least half the items independently. They put the bag in its designated place when done. They start the routine without prompting after a few weeks

If it's tricky

Child forgets where things live: Use pictures on shelves or hooks as prompts (a sticker of a water bottle above the water bottle shelf). Child rushes through without checking: Slow it down: "let's count what goes in together." Child is resistant at the end of the day: Keep unpack short and predictable - same sequence, same place, every day. Two children pack at the same time: Each manages their own bag; keep them separate to reduce comparison and conflict.
